  1. Those of us who visit McKees Rocks or grew up in the area know how famous the address 1100 Chartiers Ave, McKees Rocks, PA 15136 has been over the years. In the fantastic book published by Acadia Publishing, "McKees Rocks and Stowe", you can see old photos of the first use of that famous address, a streetcar/trolley barn. That last from about 1915 until the late 1940's.
It was redeveloped into the state of the art Loblaws in 1954. It was one of the biggest locations outside of Buffalo NY at the time. It invented one-stop shopping, sold clothing, and all kinds of famous private brands such as Elmwood, Top Taste Top Treat, NATCO and others.
My Mom bought me t shirts, baseball caps and jeans there as a very little kid.
In 1963, the building burned down and was completed destroyed. It reopened a year later as a combo store, with a Del Farm supermarket, a division of Loblaw's and next door, a beautiful Kare Drug.
When Loblaws/National Tea closed down their Western Pennsylvania division, the store was empty, but the Kare Drug remained opened for a while.
It wasn't long before the store became a Foodland. The store really didn't change much over the years. The former Kare Drug was used for storage, so the supermarket was somewhat smaller than the original DelFarm.
The Foodland had several lives, like a cat. It closed back in 2004, but returned a few months later when a HUD grant made it possible for the store partners to take possession of the building. Some minor cosmetic repairs were made, the roof was fixed, some new freezers were installed as well as a deli.
The store seemed to thrive until its abrupt closing in June 2011. The owners wanted to retire, but the building stood empty month after month.
Neighbors would ask, where is my new Bottom Dollar Food supermarket going to be built. It was a long wait but on Thursday August 16, 2012, the waiting will be over and a beautiful new Bottom Dollar will continue the savings tradition of that iconic address.
If you are not familiar with the Rocks, just drive down Chartiers Ave. and have an eye up in the sky. There will be a pink flying piggy banks pointing the way to absolutely delightful savings.
