Bottom Dollar rescues Thanksgiving. The Flying Pig is on a mission.

When funding dried up, it looked like The Salvation Army wouldn't be able to provide hot home-cooked Thanksgiving meals for needy people across Pennsylvania's Allegheny County -- until Bottom Dollar Food stepped in.

The Salisbury, N.C.-based discount grocer, a division of Delhaize America, will distribute 300 turkeys from its Carnegie, Pa. (Scott Township), location to Salvation Army staff, for consumption at 11 Thanksgiving feasts. "When one door closes, another opens," said Major William H. Bode, The Salvation Army's Western Pennsylvania divisional commander. "We were blessed that the good people at Bottom Dollar Food were standing on the other side and eager to help."

"At Bottom Dollar Food, we have a passion for helping our communities," said Nick Siniscalchi, director of operations for the chain's stores in the greater Pittsburgh area, where the banner this year opened nine stores throughout Allegheny County, in addition to four locations in Beaver and Butler counties. Bottom Dollar operates a total of 54 stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Ohio.

Eight of The Salvation Army's Thanksgiving meals will open to the public, while three will be provided only to residents of the organization's Family Caring Center, Harbor Light Center and Adult Rehabilitation Center. The meals will be served on dates ranging from Nov. 15 to Nov. 22.

While the days are getting cooler, Bottom Dollar keeps their hot deals steaming.

Some grocery stores have periodic two day blow out sales. After the two days, prices are marked up to make up for the loss leading specials. It's a vicious cycle that the flying piggy bank has pledged never to follow. His objective is simple: keep prices low and pass the savings onto his devoted followers.

That's why, at Bottom Dollar Food, the flying piggy bank never inflates prices one day to offer then at a lower price on another day.

That's just not what his Mom and Dad taught him. He believes that his upbringing has prepared him for the best job in the world to keep Bottom Dollar Food prices lower than any other grocery store in town.

For savings you can see, check out these extra special deals this week at your 1100 Chartiers Ave. McKees Rocks, PA Bottom Dollar Food location and all locations in Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Rugs Carlucci and the Flying Piggy Bank. Good cop, Bad cop. Fact or Fiction?

I am a super fan of the Rocksburg mysteries series of novels first evolving from Chief Mario Balzic and continuing with Detective Rugs Carlucci. These series of crime novels skillfully weave words into masterful dialogue and intriguing plots capturing the raw flavor of a great gritty crime novel.

Titles like The Man Who Liked Slow Tomatoes, The Rocksburg Railroad Murders, and one of Carl Constantine Kosak's (K.C. Constantine) best installments in the series, Good Sons make for interesting reading any time of year.

It got me to thinking, if Detective Carlucci weren't a fictional character, would he stop buy Bottom Dollar Food at 1100 Chartiers Ave in Rocksburg, PA during his daily patrols to pick up some snacks, juices, a banana, some Coke products for the police station's office size refrigerator?

Since in my opinion, he is one of the best fictional detectives written about in the past twenty years, I'd think he'd get a Bottom Dollar membership and through his leadership, most of the rest of the force would be regular Bottom Dollar Food customers as well, or at least their wives would be doing the family grocery shopping there.

It's no mystery that every time you shop Bottom Dollar Food, you save so much money that to some, it would appear to be down right criminal. Shopping smart isn't a crime, shopping any where else might be a crime of stupidity.

The good citizens of McKees Rocks realize when it comes to saving money on their total grocery bill, following the Flying Piggy Bank is the only way to go.

It's the absolute best way to keep more money in your wallet. It's just one of many great reasons to be Bottom Dollar Food smart.

Taking the Mystery Our of Grocery Shopping

I am a huge fan of the Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum series.

This tough bail bonds hunter has a messed up live, for sure. If you read Smokin Seventeen and Explosive Eighteen, you know what I mean.

She never has any food in her refrigerator. She is always mooching off her parents for food, for a place to stay, to borrow the big Blue and White Buick, a floating luxury tank from the 1950"s. Heck the savings alone shopping at Bottom Dollar Food would keep the gas tank full and ready to catch her bail bond skips.

I just have a hunch when the next installment appears in November, 2012, she's going to discover that she can have her peanut butter stocked in her pantry any time she craves for it by shopping her Bottom Dollar Food at 2735 S. Broad St., Trenton, NJ.

I don't think she will find her skip there since almost all of captures take place where something blows up.

One tool she has never used is a blimp.

If she shopped Bottom Dollar Food, may be she would figure out how valuable a Flying Piggy Bank could be to catch those bond skips.

Sure she could achieve a lot and make her life easier if she shopped Bottom Dollar Food. Her catch fees would go a lot further and she'd have food there for Morrelli when he stops by her apartment, invited or not.

And finally Ranger would think that his babe has finally gotten it all together.

Getting your life together by saving money is a great reason to shop Bottom Dollar Food. It's one of many.

The Flying Piggy Bank will NEVER stick it to you with high food prices

You're on a tight budget. We all are today.

And you know, like your mother's trading stamps of years ago, that supermarkets only on rare occasions give you something for almost nothing.

What I have done is started my own Gas Tank Piggy Bank.

With all the money I save at Bottom Dollar Food, I deposit the savings in my fuel fund.

When I need to fill-up, all I need to do is use that cash savings to fill up my car's gas tank.

So I don't have to buy more expensive items just to get gasoline savings.

See how it works.

If I spend $100 at Bottom Dollar Food, and then I spend the same $100 at store X for the same items, store X gives me 10 cents off discount for gas. If that same $100 at Bottom Dollar buys me in reality $115 at store x, and when I fill up my 12 gallon tank, my whopping savings is only $1.20. So with Bottom Dollar I actually cover the "gas savings" and have more than $10 leftover, which I can use for future gas purchases as well as non-grocery items like prescriptions. I don't have to shop at store x any more for gas "savings" My Bottom Dollar Food savings allow me to offset high gas pump prices every day and in every way.

The Flying Piggy Bank propels himself not with expensive flying pig fuel, but with a magical power source that allows him to spot savings for you in every aisle at every Bottom Dollar Food location. No hot air for him. Heck, with all the hot air in the atmosphere, we don't need any more hot air invading our lives.

Value and savings you can see are part of the Bottom Dollar Food advantage. They are just several of many reasons to shop where the Flying Piggy Bank calls home.

Having your cake and eating it too

I used to bake a lot when I was younger and my family was home.

I loved baking pineapple upside down cake, double layer cakes, assorted Italian cookies, traditional Polish cookies and even crepes.

But the family is gone, and I really don't have the time or energy to bake.

I enjoy gardening and watching Netflix DVDs in the early evening.

And I depend on the assortment of cakes and sweet treats baked for Bottom Dollar and sold in their bakery department.

I can still enjoy some of the sweet treats I used to make for my family, without the bother and hassle.

That's another reason I shop Bottom Dollar Food. It's one of many good reasons.

Spread your Piggy Bank Wings to Savings

You know my passion for savings.

For me, saving money on everyday food items keeps me from sacrificing necessities.

In these difficult times, the key to enjoying life is making sure you spend less on everyday essentials.

That is why I am a true believer in Bottom Dollar Food.

By shopping at Bottom Dollar, I can saving a piggy bank full of savings and not sacrifice either variety or quality.

I have it all under one compact beautiful roof.

And by the way, if you haven't tried their assorted variety cheesecake platter in the bakery section, you are missing on some really fine eating.

If you see the flying piggy bank not as high in the sky as usual, blame it on his indulgence for cheesecake. Yep, he's carrying a few extra pounds these days, but I am sure that when he starts his hectic 20 store appearance tour in September, he'll be back to his usual flying weight.

Uncomplicated Grocery Savings

My son went shopping at his local Bottom Dollar store, and saved a lot on groceries he ordinarily buys. See for yourself in this photo!

He bought some brand-name items, and was able to use manufacturer's coupons for them.

The store was well laid out, clean, and bright. It was easy to find the items he wanted. He told me that he avoided having to make an extra stop to purchase some motor oil, because he found it there, too, at a lower price than his local auto parts store. Amazing savings on everything!

Saturday, September 15, Noon – 4pm
7221 McKnight Rd., Ross Twp., Pittsburgh, PA

Just ask the Flying Piggy Bank. It's all about the savings.

National brands will always cost more than comparable store brand goods. To compete effectively without lowering price, national brands need to advertise and promote heavily to assure awareness and stimulate purchase. This is especially true for products aimed at children -- breakfast cereal, for example. Also, national brands have the resources to innovate; that is, enhance existing products as well as developing new ones that ideally create new sub-categories.

Makers of private label goods have improved quality dramatically in recent years, while maintaining a price advantage over national brands. That is very attractive to budget-conscious consumers in tough times.

Some big-time national brands already are private label makers. My hunch is that will increase if private label continues to gain share.

And why not? With My Essentials at Bottom Dollar, loyal customers get the best quality at the lowest price. You never sacrifice quality for price when you purchase My Essentials brand products After all, when you buy private label products, you really do deposit after every store visit a piggy bank full of savings.

When Piggy Banks Fly, Count Your Blessings and Your Savings

Bottom Dollar is what is known in the supermarket industry as an “extreme-discount” grocer.

An extreme-discount grocer is one who can sell thousands of everyday items cheaper than your mega large box-store/large-scale grocery store.

Bottom Dollar does so by having smaller stores, smaller staff, and less merchandise than your typical supermarket. And you get the added savings bonus of having a wide selection of My Essentials dairy, food and non-food items.

I have visited an existing Bottom Dollar location about 20 miles from my son's home over the past two years. I brought my coupons and my attitude for savings. After all, whatever the flying piggy bank tells me, I'm a true believer.

I am never disappointed with my shopping experience the several times I shopped at Bottom Dollar. The first thing that I noticed was the cool orange and lime colors throughout the store.

The store is compact, with wide aisles, and stocked to the brim with value. However, this was a nice change for me. There’s nothing I dislike more than having to slug through a 75,000 square feet store for just a gallon of milk and a carton of ice cream when I can shop at an 18,000 square feet store and get the same items with less effort and way more savings.

Oddly enough, even though the store is smaller, it feels very spacious, with plenty of room in the aisles. The store is always very clean, and the staff can't be more helpful and friendly.

I always make a general list so I can maximize my time and minimize any error by forgetting something I absolutely needed.

My goal is to pick up a range of things I will need for the coming week. I always select fresh produce, deli meats, whole grain bread, eggs, and a carton of ice cream.

I pride myself for using coupons every time I shop at Bottom Dollar. That’s one of the differences between Bottom Dollar and their competitors such as Aldi and Save-A-Lot. Bottom Dollar also offers their store loyalty card that you can load with e-coupons! How excellent is that? Their coupon policy is readily available on their website, and is very clear. Love that!

Another difference is that Bottom Dollar offers a LOT of national brand merchandise as well as their house brands. At Aldi and Save-A-Lot, you only find a few national brand items that are special purchases that change weekly. But not at Bottom Dollar where national brands are stocked every day for super savings.

However, there are also some similarities among these extreme-discount grocers. Everything is strictly bag-your-own. If you do not bring your own bags, you can opt to buy reusuable bags or plastic bags. They have bagging tables along the front of the store for you to bag up your goodies.

All in all, I continue to come away very impressed by my experience at Bottom Dollar Food.

I will be even more impressed on August 1, 2012 when a brand new Bottom Dollar opens in my neighborhood at 1100 Chartiers Ave, in McKees Rocks, PA.

I hope you found this post helpful and that you’ll check out Bottom Dollar Food to experience the savings for yourself. Click on http://www.bottomdollarfood.com for a location near you.

These opinions are my own, and influenced by nothing other than my experience. And tell 'em you stopped by to shop there because the flying piggy bank directed you there to haul home their out-of-this-world savings.

The Flying Piggy Bank Brings Joyful Savings to Thousands of Bottom Dollar shoppers every day.

Groceries are way too expensive. We all know that. Okay, it isn't the only time I've said it, I keep repeating it every time I need to go on a grocery shopping trip! I have been combining coupons, BOGOs, loyalty cards, every tool I can think of, looking for ways to cut costs for a long time now. I comparison shop. I am willing to buy more private label products with quality equal to the national brands.

When it was announced that Bottom Dollar Food was coming to McKees Rocks, PA, I knew I was in for a treat since my son's family shops at their Bottom Dollar in Maryland.

McKees Rocks is now blessed with two grocery stores as well as two others in the neighboring township with a McKees Rocks mailing address.

We have multiple grocery stores, super centers, discount stores, specialty stores and more within a ten-mile radius of our neighborhood, so I was thinking they would need to offer something pretty impressive to compete within our market and win me over. But when I knew that Bottom Dollar was sending their "when piggybanks fly" mascot to the Rocks, I realized that my prayers were finally answered.

Some people have preconceived notions about what types of food and products they would have in stock and that the savings would not be worth adding them to my grocery routine. You will be amazed at the name brand selection and savings on everything from Coke to laundry detergent.

Bottom Dollar Food at 1100 Chartiers Ave., McKees Rocks, PA has become my primary choice for grocery shopping. I can make my own fuel perks with the savings I accumulate each and every visit to Bottom Dollar.

Heck, it pays to hang out with a very smart flying piggybank. Like a guardian angel, he looks after each and every Bottom Dollar shop to guarantee them the freshest products as the absolute lowest prices.

There are certain items that I only buy at Bottom Dollar Food such as their quality My Essentials line of private label paper towels, eggs, milk, ice cream, etc.

And their walk-in produce section is like being in produce heaven. Take my word for it that in my opinion a wonderful produce department at some of the best prices in our area.

And with their everyday low pricing and special purchases the savings adds up fast.

Check their website before you shop. You can see the weekly flyer, sign up for emails with money-saving offers (like $ off your whole purchase coupons) and you can load electronic coupons to your membership card.

Plus you can make a printable grocery list. This comes in handy and forces you to keep to your list and not add any impulse items, unless you must.

You won't feel guilty since Bottom Dollar Foods guarantees the lowest prices.

Check your coupons. Bottom Dollar Foods, unlike other local discount grocery stores, does accept manufacturer’s coupons and they have Catalina machines which print you coupons at check out for your next visit.

Bottom Dollar Foods will beat a competitor’s current advertised price by a penny. Just bring the ad with you and give to the cashier so they can verify the item and the price.

Similar to other discount stores, you will need to bring your own bags or reusable totes to bag your groceries. They do provide boxes if you prefer. (I do love the boxes for keeping things together in the trunk!)
